Interchanging Microchannel Coils and Tube and Fin Coils.

Our customers sometimes ask whether they should use microchannel coils or tube and fin coils in their heat exchangers. Traditional tube and fin coils are the most common coils we sell. Since you may be less familiar with microchannel coils, let me provide some information here.

Microchannel coils are a different type of condenser coil. In tube and fin coils, the refrigerant moves through the tubes and exchanges heat in the fins. In microchannel coils, the refrigerant moves through aluminum channels throughout the fin pack.

Some benefits of microchannel coils include:

  • Smaller Condenser Size: Condensing units with microchannel coils often weigh less than systems with tube and fin coils, and unit height may be reduced on some models.
  • Less Refrigerant Microchannel coils use significantly less refrigerant than systems with tube and fin coils.
  • Improved Heat TransferMicrochannel coils transfer heat more efficiently across a smaller surface, which reduces energy usage.
  • Microchannel coils require one braze operation instead of 50-100 manually brazed joints for tube and fin coils.
  • All of our stock microchannel coils come standard with epoxy coating, which will increase the life of the coil and a 5 year warranty.

For customers more familiar with working on tube and fin coils, we can replace Carrier, Trane or York microchannel coils with standard tube and fin coils.

Emergent Coils offers both tube and fin coils and microchannel coils as replacements for your current coils. We have many coils in stock, and you can use our searchable stock coils database here to find specifications and pricing at any time. We offer quick ship on our in-stock and custom orders.
