Sizing tips for replacement coils
Sizing replacement coils correctly ensures you have the most efficient coil for your HVAC system. Incorrectly sized coils can increase energy costs and cause temperature fluctuations in buildings, which leads to unhappy employees, tenants and customers.
I’m providing basic sizing tips here. Please see Emergent Coils’ sizing resources for more information and demonstrations. Our videos show you how to take measurements for different types of coils and we have blank drawings for you to use to record measurements.
One of the most important dimensions in sizing replacement coils is the overall casing size. After you determine the casing dimensions, you can use those and work backwards to find the tube and fin dimensions. The fin height runs perpendicular to the tubes and the fin length runs along the tubes.
We sometimes see customers incorrectly size coil connections, which can force pumps to work harder than necessary if connections are undersized. Another replacement coil sizing mistake we see is in the overall length or height of the coil. While you may be able to use a replacement coil that is slightly smaller than needed, a replacement coil that is too large can’t be squeezed into place. Learning how to take measurements correctly saves time, money and inconvenience.
In addition to correctly sizing replacement coils, performance should be considered. How long did the current coil last? Were there any performance issues, like excessively high energy bills combined with inconsistent heating and cooling? Different materials may be required to improve performance. For example, if corrosion shortened the life of the coil, consider using a corrosion-resistant material like stainless steel.
